A New Year, A New Look

A new year, a new look. If you’re looking to upgrade your home décor for 2015, here are some of the hot trends to follow for a great home makeover!

  • Color. Pantone's color of the year is marsala, a deep wine red. it pairs well with olive and rose, which will give your décor a warm, earthy feel. Marsala is not popular with everyone, however. If it's not for you, try a rich, bold blue that reminds you of the deep ocean, or pull olive off of the accent features and make it your focal color. Green and blue or green and marsala are both winning combinations. And pink goes with them all!

  • Metallic. Continuing along those lines, gold is out and copper is in. Metallics aren't just for accent anymore either -- while a copper vase or light fixture is nice, how about a dining set in shiny metallic material? Or your bed frame? Or your kitchen backsplash and pulls?

  • Neutral. Taupe is hot this year. It's so unassuming that it goes with whichever color palette you choose, but instead of a counterpoint, it strengthens your main color. Need more contrast? Soft greys are also a big hit.

  • Light. Let it in! Ditch the blinds and shutters and bring out the sheers for a light and airy look that lets natural light show your home to its best advantage.

  • Mixups. Don't bother to match the upholstery on the chairs in your dining room or the pillows on your sofa. A more casual look in your entertaining areas is the way to go, and this resurfacing of an almost "shabby chic" trend brings in the right note of casual elegance. Ethnic prints in a variety of styles are a great choice.

  • Back to nature. Floral patterns are back. Accent pillows and accent walls take big prints, while nature themes infuse furniture styling and lighting fixtures, and fresh-cut flowers and growing plants are a beautiful addition to any room. Some innovators are bringing the outdoors inside, with moss walls in the bathroom as a counterpoint to their rooftop gardens.

  • Room to remodel. Last year it was the kitchen; this year, the bathroom is the place that is getting a facelift. Freestanding tubs and dark, miniature tiles are in. Deep colors like marsala and olive are also hot, paired with grey which replaces all the white accents. This is a place to relax and soak away the stress of the day, not just to get clean.

Whatever style you choose, though, the most important thing is to make it your own. Choosing the materials, colors, and lighting that make you happy to come home are the best design elements you can have!
